I am sad to report that Arthur C. Clarke, one of my favourite authors died last night in his home in Sri Lanka at the age of 90.
He had a profound importance not just on science fiction but on the way we view the universe. He accurately predicted some uses of science and technology that are now a reality. His book 'Islands in the Sky' was the first science fiction book I ever read and got me started on a long path. His work has ever been an inspiration and comfort to me.
He will be sorely missed. :(

I *heart* Randall Munroe, really I do.
Today's axis of fruit tastiness is both brilliant and controversial, but then I was reading his blog and I discover that he has made his own ball pit instead of a couch!
Clearly the man is a genius.
So what say you guys? Does the impracticality of it (notably cleaning it) outweigh the fun value? I do have room in my living room for one and it would be AWESOME for parties. :)

Once again you have given me a reason to be proud of the new government and astonished by your honesty and sincerity.
You did a good thing today, one that is many years overdue but still very important to so many people.
I think you're doing a simply marvellous job at this whole PM thing. I hope it gives Howard something to reflect on.

Well it's pretty red, but darker than I was after. Looks good in the sun apparently. I may post pics from yesterdays hobbit party (with corset!) if I can just provide them with an address in the ACT for their records. This address will not be used for mailing purposes at all, it is just so that I can be funded for free as the course isn't funded in NSW.
So I'm desperately trying to find someone who has some family or something down there who wouldn't mind me putting their address as mine to save me $2000 and to help me get a further qualification.
I would be forever indebted if anyone does have an address I can use.
Thanks for reading to the end of my insanely busy time. I have done the holiday thing, done the forum meet up to come.
On the Sunday we picked up the car and headed south east down towards Port Arthur via the pretty town of Richmond. Much like Berrima or Morpeth right down to the old fashioned lolly store. Also many pretty old buildings like this one:
We didn't end up going to Port Arthur because it was played at a friend's funeral. 50. Favorite song, period: Changes on a regular basis and I have different faves for listening and for singing. Impossible to answer really!
Yes, I am a bit of a nerd myself. Two monitors hooked up to my PC and an iBook (that will be going wireless soon!). So I may as well give in to the inevitable. This begs the obvious question of how to catch the attention of the public and directing it away from whatever he is trying to hide. In this circumstance it's hardly surprising, what the government are doing with the IR laws is pretty repugnant but it's not getting much press. Bad enough to do away with unfair dismissal for small companies, but when you suddenly change the definition from a company that has 20 employees to one that has 200... yikes!
It looks like we will shortly be living in a mess!
Random fact for today: The armadillo is the only animal other than the human that can catch leprosy.

Still in Perth. Having lots of fun. Part of me doesn't want to leave really.
I've visited Kaneda at Punch every day this week. It's been worth it for the supremely wonderful coffee. I wish it wasn't on the other side of the country from my abode. I bought far too many coffee beans to console myself however.
I've also visited Perth zoo on my zoo friends pass. That was cool and I got some good photos. I've been catching up with lots of friends and also making some new ones. :)
Last night we went to karaoke. After I got over my nervousness of singing on a stage in front of strangers (admittedly not very many of them) I had a really good time. I did butcher a few songs though but a random stranger complimented me on my rendition of I will survive! Afterwards I got to witness Perth people sledging Adelaide, which this Sydneysider found most amusing. :)
On the shopping front, I have a shiny new phone and it's bright red!! :D I also have new boots (finally). My bank account now hates me.
Anyway, I'm posting this on japester's laptop which I haven't been able to borrow much because he's needed it to study. I should probably go and give it back now.

If you live in Canberra and can lend your address for a good cause, a friend of mine from flickr who is a very talented photographer needs a Canberra address. You can see her work here. Particularly check out her Interestingness and people sets.
Here is why she needs it:
I'm writing to most of my Aussie contacts to ask a huge favour of anyone who can help me.
I have to do a new course to upgrade my current teaching qualifications and this course costs about $2000, which I don't have. Dont worry, I'm not asking for money :-)
I have been told that a company will upgrade me for free through a funded program if I can just provide them with an address in the ACT for their records.
Thanks for reading to the end of this and sorry to disturb your flickring with this sort of request. It's just that I have to have this address by the end of this week and so I'm trying every angle I can think of.
Talk to you soon and thanks again.
Kim
I love her work and would like to help her if possible. If you can help, let me know and I'll get you in contact with her. :)

Miracle - The Corrs |
] |
This morning was unremarkable in most respects until I stepped out of my front door to see fog. Summer Hill wreathed in fog is lovely beyond speaking, the way it dims the edges of things and turns the mundane into a fairyland of the imagination.
I desperately wanted to grab my camera and capture it. The spire of the church cutting through the mist, the old flour factory looming from the fog. I did see that from the bus, cream on grey it was a beautiful study in subtlety. Unfortunately work calls, but that fog fired my imagination and helped bring wonder back. Even along Paramatta road it softened the traffic and added beauty. By the time I had reached Central it had burned off but there was still a delicious chill in the air. Winter is coming to Sydney, it may be my last here for the forseeable future.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good music player to use in XP? I'm using iTunes at the moment but I'm not very happy with it (in Windows at least) so I'd like other suggestions as to what's good and why. If it has an algorithm that remembers what you like, that would be rather neat.
Also, if any of you guys have any windoze apps that you especially endorse, I'd love to hear about them. Especially an integrated chat program (I'm currently using MSN, YM and Gmail chat).
Thanks. :)
